Question : How does HP inkjet printer detect whether the cartridge is the correct type or not?
My HP 950C keeps complaining about the color cartridge (either saying it does not presence or wrong type). I have tried cleaning the contact as HP web site suggested but no luck. The cartridges have built-in circuitry on them (typically, you can see it when
you peel off that little plastic bit after you've opened the package). This
communicates with your printer. As far as workarounds, I don't know, but I
wouldn't try to mess around with a different cartiridge that isn't appropriate
for my printer - you're better off just getting the appropriate one than trying
some sort of workaround that can mess up your printer.

You might be using the wrong type that the printer required. I have HP computer
and using Epson printer, it works well. Keep on checking and try another
cartridge, the one that compatible to your printer.

There is an electronic encoding on the cartridges itself. If the electronics on
the rear are damaged, defective or just plain corroded it will result in
improper connectivity leading the printer into thinking it has the wrong
cartridges. You may want to try gently cleaning the electronics by gently
rubbing them in one direction with a pink eraser. (The electronics are the
little copper squares on the back)If this doesn't work then unfortunately it may
be time to replace the cartridge. Just to clarify the correct cartridge for your
printer is an HP 78 or HP C6578.
